1 This Force can, of course, still co-operate with guerrillas in the way the sas and others did in the last war.

2 The German Special Forces acted as Army Commando-type Forces and as Forces with Guerrillas; this combination is explained by the fact that the Germans had practically only one Special Force for land warfare at a time.

One may, however, reduce the number of Special Forces further by reducing the number of their tasks. Field-Marshal Lord Slim is of the opinion that Special Forces must operate only in small parties. This means that Army Commandos’ and Rangers’ tasks would no longer be performed by Special Forces and that Chindits and probably even Independent Companies would not be required in the future. Field-Marshal Slim lists five Special Forces’ tasks, namely :

1. to sabotage vital installations;
